Floral motif Cinnabarware (Red Chinese Carved Lacquer)

Made between 1960-80s in Peking, China.

Cinnabarwares were originally reserved only for use/appreciation in the palace as they are extremely tedious and expensive to make. Every single piece of hand made Cinnabarware can take anywhere between 120-200 days to complete depending on complexity. Speaking of which, from the 5th picture, we can observe multiple lacquer layers carefully applied on this piece and carved meticulously to perfection.

Many of the pieces made during this period were meant for export and they usually feature a brass base with painted enamel on the inside and base. The added layer of enamel actually enhanced the utility of this piece as it prevents the unique lacquer aroma from contaminating the contents inside, also we are loving this blue and red combination.
